It’s’ been said that the thing that bothers you most is a sign of where your energy should be invested. I was always troubled by women who claimed not to know their husbands were bigamists, pedophiles, ax murderers… Couldn’t they figure out that the man who kept bullying them wasn’t a friend? Decades later I learned that I was bothered by it because I was one of them.

I remember shopping in preparation for what I was told was a temporary assignment in Bahrain when I noticed a woman in line beside me. She was not hiding a recently acquired black eye. While I was still figuring out if and how I could speak a blessing over her, she turned to me and asked, What is love? I was floored because I hadn’t figured that out for myself, so imagine both our surprise when out of my mouth flowed these words:

Love is patient. Love is kind. Does not envy. Does not boast. Is not proud, or rude. Does not demand His own way. Is not irritable. Keeps no record of being wronged. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Where did that come from? The evidence to me that it answered her heart cry was undeniable, as a holy hush swept over her. Of all the many people in that store, truly our meeting was pre-arranged by Heaven. Seeing hope rise up in her carried me for a long time. Before I could get it together her spirit knew that I was hungry to reach out with what I didn’t even know I had to give. What would take many years for me to see was that I was in as great a need of someone to walk a mile with me. She had finally found the right person to ask. Soon I would become intimate with The Author of that quote in a relationship that would transform my life forever.
